North Platte River

Fishing Hot spot

The North Platte River, which winds through the heart of downtown Casper, stretches through the Upper Platte Valley and has been named a blue ribbon trout fishery  by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department because of the roughly 4,000 brown trout, rainbow trout and Snake River cutthroat per mile.

“Casper, Wyoming is a true trout angler’s mecca. It’s one of the healthiest and well-managed river systems that I have ever fished, and I will be coming back year after year.” – Curtis Fleming, Fly Rod Chronicles

The world-famous Miracle Mile is actually a 5.5-mile stretch of the North Platte River just 30 miles southwest of Casper that is fed by Seminoe Reservoir. It is an extremely fertile tailwater that offers anglers a chance to catch very large trophy trout … and with approximately 4,000 fish per mile, fishermen and women will have plenty of opportunities to catch their fish of a lifetime. This area is floatable but much more effective for wade-fishing.

Grey Reef is one of the two Blue Ribbon tailwaters on the North Platte River that begins just below Alcova Reservoir and flows north towards Casper. Considered one of the best rainbow trout fisheries in the country, it is known for its impressive number of fish — particularly large ones. The average weight is 3-6 pounds, but fish weighing 8 pounds or more have been reported. In fact, American Angler Magazine named it the #1 Big Fish Destination in the World! Located 30 miles southwest of Casper, Grey Reef is open year-round.
