Our 69th season celebrates Aspects of Love, and we open with two composers who expressed love in completely opposite ways, Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms. The program begins with Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Wagner’s love affair with a Swiss banker’s wife inspires the burning passion of these songs. Talented soprano Alexandra Smither will join for Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, using her luminous voice to bring its passion to life. The first half ends with highlights from Carmen, opera’s famous sultry seductress. The concert closes with the second symphony of Johannes Brahms, with sunny and cheerful music that masked his lifelong unrequited love for Clara Schumann, wife of celebrated composer Robert Schumann.
