Learn about the brave women who worked as laundresses for the army in the 19th century
at Fort Caspar Museum Association’s Winter Lunch and Learn.
The Fort Caspar Museum Association (FCMA) is pleased to announce its Winter Lunch and Learn program. It will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 20th and will feature author Jennifer J. Lawrence who will present on her 2016 book, “Soap Suds Row: The Bold Lives of Army Laundresses, 1802-1876.”
Women have always followed the troops, but military laundresses were the first to be carried on the rolls of the U.S. Army. They traveled and lived alongside the soldiers during two of the most important conflicts in United States history: the Civil War and the war on the western frontier. They marched hundreds of miles, often carrying babies and toting small children, and tackled one of life’s most onerous tasks. Learn about these brave, adventurous, and unorthodox women.
An optional lunch will be served at 12:00 pm, followed by the presentation at 1:00 pm. Reservations are required for the lunch and must be made by January 18th (call 235-8462). The cost for lunch is $5 for FCMA members and $8 for non-members; the lecture is free with paid lunch or free with paid Museum admission. The lunch will feature a buffet of fried chicken, sides, desserts, and beverages.
Fort Caspar Museum’s hours in January are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission prices are $1.50 for adults; $1 for youth (ages 13-18 years); FREE for children (12 years and younger) and for FCMA members.
