Night Ski

Ski by moonlight

In Casper, we take a night out to new heights — and lower temperatures. One of our favorite ways to celebrate friends, nature and our beautiful skyline is nordic skiing near sunset atop Casper Mountain.

For local skier John Kirlin, the experience is magical. “The thing I love the most about night skiing is that it’s cold out, but if you’re moving, you’re not going to freeze, and you’ll feel warm. Everything is just still and calm. There’s not a lot of life out. The animals have all banded down. You don’t hear sounds. You can really be at peace out there and open up your mind.”

Whether you need time to be alone with your thoughts or crave a refreshing escape with your best pals, night skiing is one WyoCity winter experience that you won’t want to miss. The evening begins at the Casper Mountain Trails Center, located just minutes from downtown Casper. With 42 kilometers of groomed trails ranging from beginner to expert, it is a truly unique and special facility. Suitable for both classic and skate styles of skiing, the trails are a popular place for a vigorous winter workout.

At night, a portion of the trails near the Trails Center are lit, but a full moon can bathe the entire area with enough natural glow to safely light your path. You can choose to enjoy the stillness and quiet hush of the mountain or bring a group of friends for a livelier ski. But even your rowdiest friends will discover a stillness and peace that can only exist when gliding between the stars and civilization. Don’t forget to pack a guitar and firewood for the after party at a nearby campsite!
