Ice Fishing

Break the ice

The weather outside is frightful, but that doesn’t deter die-hard fishermen of all ages from sliding out on the ice of Alcova Lake and Pathfinder Reservoir to drill for prize walleye, trout and perch. These two lakes, which lie about 30 miles southwest of Casper, are the ultimate ice fishing destinations during cold winter months.

Opportunities vary from year to year, as a minimum 4” sheet of ice is recommended for ice fishing, though 6” is optimal. During especially cold winters, the ice thickens enough to offer at least three months of ice fishing heaven! Each licensed fisherman is allowed up to six lines in the water at the same time, so bring your tip-ups and jigging rods and don’t miss a single catch. If you’re the competitive type, be sure to visit Casper for the annual HAWG Ice Fishing Derby in late January with more than $50,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs.
